MAHAMA REFUGEE CAMP

The Burundian crisis which started in march 2015 has caused more than 250 000 Burundians to flee their homeland. Approximately 75 000 of them have come to Rwanda, and while some of them have the means and contacts to migrate to the cities, the majority is received in refugee camps. Mahama is the biggest refugee camp in the country, hosting close to 50 000 refugees. It has been put in place in the Eastern part of the country in Kirehe district.
GHDF’s services in the camp started by the end of October, with the tasks of constructing new and improved dischargeable latrines. In less than one month and half, GHDF completed this mission and was put in charge of Sanitation and Hygiene responsibilities starting from January 2016.
Aside from the construction of latrines and ensuring their frequent dislodging, GHDF is conducting hand-washing campaigns, and general hygiene promotion through out the camp, with Community mobilizers and hygiene promoters/ambassadors assigned to every village.
