Inauguration of new WASH facilities at Mahama

On January 20 2016, GHDF’s Chief Executive Mr. Patrick Karangwa visited Mahama camp alongside other country directors of implementing NGOs’, government officials and local authorities for the inauguration of educational, health and sanitation facilities.

The day started of with the inauguration of 112 new classrooms built by ADRA with the support of UNHCR. These new facilities were constructed as an extension to Paysanat School’s 29 classrooms located just outside Mahama camp. A great number of refugee children will now be able to return to their studies, and join the local community kids in their curriculum. After a short speech, ADRA’s country Director was accompanied by the mayor of Kirehe, the minister of education, minister of MIDIMAR and UNHCR representative to cut the ribbon and lead a visit of the new facilities.

Next on the program was the inauguration of the Elevated water tank built by World Vision. Their representative took this opportunity to underline World Vision’s achievements since Mahama camp’s opening while transferring the responsibility of Water Supply to UNHCR and OXFAM.

The third stop was in the Mahama II section of the camp, where Save the Children inaugurated their Health Center. The importance of this new addition was felt since the facilities were already providing services to a large number of patients during the visit. The representative of the ministry of Health was there to witness the quality of the Center and of the services delivered.

Last but not least was the inauguration of GHDF’s newly built sanitation facilities. Visitors were welcomed by a group of Hygiene Promoters performing a song, which is part of their campaign to sensitize the population. Before inaugurating the new blocks of latrines and showering space, Mr. Karangwa took the time to thank UNHCR and MIDIMAR for their support and explain the advantages of these new facilities. Firstly, the 100 blocks of latrines were built in a record time of a month and a half, using hydraform bricks fabricated on site, making this operation very cost effective. GHDF’s chief executive also mentioned the sense of ownership and responsibility given to each family, since they will hold on to the key which gives them access to their respective facility.

The day ended with a performance from a dance group, speeches and remarks from distinguished guests, and the hand out of school kits to the youth who will be attending school in the following days.
